Houses That We Dreamt Of: The Interiors of Delphine and Reed Krakoff by Delphine Krakoff, Reed Krakoff, Photos by Ivan Terestchenko, Rizzoli Publications, US $65.00, Pp 242, October 2017, ISBN 978-0847860043
In our lives, we see many houses we like but very few of them remain in our imagination for long. If you see one of the houses Delphine and Reed Krakoff have designed, it will likely stay in your mind for long. Many designers can renovate and design luxurious houses but few of them can turn them into homes. Delphine and Reed Krakoff are a rare pair of designers who do this. In Houses That We Dreamt Of, Delphine and Reed Krakoff say the houses and all that they encompass are central not only to their creative lives but to their day-to-day lives as well. They write, “With each project, we begin down the path of an original narrative, which takes us in an entirely new direction of design and decoration and the functional aspects of both.”
Each home follows a story, taking cues from what a property once was and what it might have been. A house tells you what it wants to be. Each decision leads to the next. Delphine and Reed Krakoff say that the challenge is to reimagine a place — not to be historically precise but to blend its past with our personal view of the present. Once a plan has been established, the excitement begins turning and twisting that story, with the juxtaposition of design, decoration, and tone. The end is always a surprise. The architects, craftsmen, and artists each leave their mark and contributing to the broad narrative. In simpler words, these creative forays ultimately become a place for us to live our lives. This is how they turn a house into a home.
Delphine Krakoff and Reed Krakoff have been designing homes for long but they decided to do this book when they met Ivan T. Reed. Krakoff says that Ivan T. Reed shot one of their homes and when they saw his pictures, they decided to do the book. Delphine Krakoff says “it was more of a sentimental thing – a record of the homes we’ve done together. Just as Reed captures our summers with the kids in these great bound photo books that he makes for me every year. It’s a way for our children.” Reed Krakoff says he is drawn to books that seem very personal. He does not like the books that are like a magazine feature that documents every room.
When Delphine and Reed Krakoff design or renovate a house, they turn it into a home with contemporary furniture and art. They are masterful at bringing calmness, serenity, and beauty together and create a luxurious feel in order to turn a house into a home. Throughout the pages, they discuss the art of luxurious design and interior. Delphine and Reed Krakoff are two great talents you rarely come across in the field of interior design. Houses That We Dreamt Of is a collection of stories of seven houses Delphine and Reed Krakoff together turned into homes although they have worked together on many more. It is simply a treat to hold this beautifully manufactured book in your hands.
